To Eat or not to Eat?

To Eat or not to Eat?

Adolescence is one of the most particular times for all of us. We approach a whole new world full of challenges and continuous pressures: from school, family, friends, and we can’t often find an appropriate relief valve.

Do you use any of these methods, or anything similar to find relief, because of stress or other reasons?

  • Skip meals
  • Download calories counting apps
  • You make yourself throw up
  • You take laxatives or diuretics
  • You constantly take your weight or look yourself in the mirror
  • You eat until you feel sick
  • You tend to isolate yourself

If you actually apply any of these behaviors, you may be suffering from nutritional behavior disorders, but don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Many adolescents suffer from eating disorders, but it is possible to avoid them. However, it is difficult to do it without asking for help, so if you have noticed you are suffering from these problems or somebody around you is, tell your parents, your friends or turn to specific associations.

These eating disorders, or ED, are very common among young people, but we can find them more often in teenagers who are particularly influenced by stereotypes shown on social media.

The different types of eating disorders are:

  • Nervous anorexia
  • Nervous bulimia
  • Binge eating (uncontrolled eating)

The main reasons why you get sick are:

  • Family history with a past of depression, substance abuse, or eating disorders
  • Criticism towards eating habits, physical aspect or body weight
  • Professional pressures for physical shape ( dancers, models, athletes)
  • Anxiety problems, weak self-confidence, perfectionism
  • Physical or psychological abuse, death of dear ones
  • Complicated family relationships
  • Stressful work, school or university related situations.
